Hi, new here and could use some help with my CB

topic posted Sun, January 15, 2006 - 3:31 PM by  Michael
I have had this Cobra CB for a while now and need to get it up and running. I'm told that I need to have my antenna tuned before it will work. Any ideas how I go about doing this? Thanks for your help and any other CB basics would be more than appreciated! I can't wait to get this baby going.

Antenna tuning is not mandatory, however, it is strongly suggested for lower frequencies such as those used in CB.

You should be able to just hook it up and have it work. If you tune the antenna, it will work better.

That said, go to Radio Shack and drop $20 on an 'SWR Meter'. This device connects between your CB and your antenna and will give you a reading on how well your antenna is tuned.

To get the reading, do this:

    1. Set the switch on the meter to CAL (Calibrate). Go to channel 20 AM. Key up and turn the knob on the meter until the needle on the meter is just exactly on the last mark on the scale. Let go of the key.

    2. Set the switch on the meter to SWR (Standing Wave Ratio). Key up the radio again and take a reading. You are going to be reading the scale that runs from 1 on the left to infinity on the right.

If the reading you get is below 3 (this is called 3:1), then you are reasonably good. If it is below 2, that is excellent.

If you get 3:1, you might want to consider checking again using channels 1 and 40. If you get much higher than 3:1 on either of those channels, or if you get more than 3:1, then definitely tune the antenna.

If you get less than 3:1, you can usually just leave it be.

If you get less than 1.5:1, don't even think about messing with it, it's good!

As for the process of actually tuning, there will be some instructions that came with your antenna.

If it is a mobile whip, then it is likely that there is a set screw near the bottom. You loosen the set screw and then slide the whip up or down to change the tuning, and retighten.

If you slide it one way, and it gets better, you slide it a little mre that way until it starts to get worse.

If you slide it and it gets worse, slide it the other way.

You are trying to focus on a sweet spot in the middle somewhere.

    Does that help?

Thanks Glenn! Yes, that does help. I have an older Cobra base station and had no luck with just pluging in the antenna and going. I will check out on of those meters and see if that helps. I also have many diffrent knobs and such on the station itself and wonder if I have those set right as well.

It has...Squelch-Dynamike-RF Gain:SWR cal-Delta Tune-Tone....as well as three switches which include a SWR, SWR CAL, %MOD switch.

Thanks for the help here, it's been a while for ma and I really would love to have this up and running!

Actually, it sounds like your rig already has an SWR meter built-in. You might be able to forego that purchase.

Have you tried poking around the net to see if someone has a manual that you can download or purchase?

Also, if plug-n-go didn't work, there may be something wrong with the radio or the antenna that is above and beyond tuning issues.

Are you a complete newbie to CB and other 2-way? I'm asking because I don't want to insult your intelligence, but I also don't want to leave out important details.

          Hey Glenn,
yea, I'm totally new here. Good idea about getting a hold of a manual somewhere and come to think of it it might have a built in SWR meter 'cause it has two round meters built in on top of the station one being <S/RF PWR> and the other being <SWR/MOD> and both have needles with a guage.
Thanks so much for all your helpful insite. I'll check on a manual and see if there is a SWR meter built in. Thanks!

yup! I remember SWR meters too, you need to set up with one of those between the antenna and radio..
sounds like a fun project, I may want to dust off the ol Navajo some day and do the same actually..I wonder what kind of people are on this thing after 30+ years....!?!?

CB is a lot quieter these days than it was in the 80s. Scanning the dial really quickly will find that channels 6 and 19 are the busiest, and that 9 is the quietest, which is really no change from before, just the actual levels have changed, if you follow me.

I also think that the crowd that are on there are friendlier than they used to be.

Channel 19 is still populated mostly by truckers, 6 by folks running illegal rigs, and the sidebanders tend to hang out on 16 and 36-40, so a lot of the "gentlemen's agreement" band plan still works.

The locals in my area tend to hang out on 22. I pop in once in a while, but not much. One of my immediate neighbours use it because they run a wide load escort service. As such, there is already a CB in the escort car, so they added a base station so the husband can call his wife when he is getting close to home.

All in all, CB is very usable these days compared to 20-30 , or even 10 years ago.

I can imagine. I go back to the way back club of 72...I had 23 channels and illegal (at the time) channel 23a (between 22 and 23) which later became channel 24...which I shot 6 watts from on my directional beam...yikes what a geek I was..

There is no dishonour in being a geek. :-)

My personal bit of illegal radio activity is well behind me.... I ran a pirate broadcast radio station for a few years while I was in college and briefly thereafter. That would have been in the early to mid 90s.

Channels 24 and 25 are both between channels 22 and 23. There are a couple of other gaps between channels, too, but I'm feeling too lazy to look them up just at the second.
